NEW SPLIT CANE BAMBOO FLY RODS

BY

DON ANDERSEN

June 2, 2023

Good Morning,

I's been a while since I upsted my site. Life has changed over the past while with our family. My wife requires more care
which leaves much less time to play with the rods.
Still, there was some time used building rods plus several fishing
                                                                                            trips enjoyed.

                                                                                                            Life goes on!

    Now to the rod building.

I was hoping to a 9' 0" 2 wt. on flowing water but the fall fishing got in the way.I had some time to work

on rods over the past months,  Completed several commisioned rods and repairs to  others  soaked up the time,

however, I did get two rods completed for listing on the site.

Keep well all,

Don

Rod Serial # 018421 – 3 weight

I was looking for a shorter bamboo rod for those little streams we all like to fish. Starting with a

Payne 98 taper, it was modified for the scalloped hollowing process and the taper was smoothed

slightly. The rod casts a 3 weight great in my lawn test the other day.

Rod Serial  # 019615  - 5 Weight.

Today was a lucky find. Decided to check the web site reality against the rods in storage and I found a rod that I’d built in 2015 and never put up for sale. So out to lawn it went after checking the “build sheet” for the taper. It was a Payne 102. Did a quick net search and found several people who thought the rod was a medium fast 5 weight. After casting it for some time, I can only agree. 20>60’ casts with ease. A great taper.

Serial Number 019622H - 4 Wight

This rod was a delightful experiment. Utilizing my popular 7’9” 5 weight taper extending it 3” and slimming the taper resulted in a fine 8’0” 4 weight rod. Like other rods I’m building presently, this rod is scalloped hollow built in a 3-piece configuration.

Rod Serial # 039618 – 4 Weight

This rod is one of two that were “scalloped hollowed”. Utilizing the same taper for a 3 piece rod, I constructed a two piece rod. The swing weight saving was

More than the equivalent the 2 piece construction. The rod was lawn cast and seemed very light in the hand.

Rod Serial # 029615 – 3/4 Weight

This taper was provided to me by one of the most innovative eastern US bamboo rod builders. – Tom Smithwick. This is a honey of a taper. I have test cast this rod with both 3 and 4 weight double taper lines and they work very well. This year, with Tom’s consent, advice and support I made two similar rods. One butt section supported two tips, a one weight and the other tip, a two weight. The other butt section had also two tips, one in a 3 weight and the other in a four weight. Both rods found good homes immediately. Rather than attempt another 1/2 weight rod that would be seen as many as a novelty, I chose to build the original 3 weight taper. Tom cautioned me that he found the rod carried a 4 weight as well and he was bang on.

Rod Serial # 019321H 7’9” - 5 Weight

This is a 3-piece configuration of the very popular 7’9” 5 weight rod of which I have made about 50. The blank is scalloped hollowed to reduce swing weight. The hollowing requires a slight compensation in the taper. The rod was lawn cast and feels very light in the hand. I made several casts >60’ and the rod tracks very accurate.

CROSS OVER RODS

Rod Serial # 019618 – 6 Weight

This taper was developed for fishing the windy areas of southern Alberta. It is a mild parabolic taper derived from Paul Young tapers. After making several of these, I finally got a taper that I was happy with. The rod was named after a lot of playing with the taper. It is called THE PLAN. I have now built two of this taper for the 2017-18 season. One is offered for sale and the other became a donation rod to the Edmonton Trout Unlimited Chapter Lloyd Shea Fund.

Heavier Trout or Lake Rods

This is a series of rod tapers that have been designed to cast 6 weight lines. Personally, the 6 weight lines covers all my needs.

When I fish lakes, I generally have two rods strung ready to go. One with floating line with either a floater, hover or

                              rate 2>6 sinking line.

Rod Serial # 029611 – 6 Weight

This is a Dickerson 8015 taper than was new to me and from the butt section dimensions, it should and does cast like a cannot. While I’ve heard this taper is rated for a 6 weight, I think a 7 weight line would work as well.  The rod casts very well to 75’ or so.

Rod Serial # 049610 – 6 Weight

This rod is a personal favorite taper. The Para 15 developed by Paul Young many years ago is described as a Parabolic taper. I use this rod for fishing trout lakes. My personal rod quiver contains 4 of these rods and over the past 15 years have delivered yeoman performances all over Western Canada.

Rod Serial # 029919 – 6 Weight

This taper was created by west coast angler John Bokstrom. John’s taper was designed for cutthroat fishing in the Harrison River and sloughs of the Fraser River when the Coho fry emerge. This rod throws a 6 weight line with authority. This first rod of this taper I  built was a request for Mrs. Denny for her husband. The Denny’s ran the best fly shop Ive ever been into. Several years alter I was contracted to build another for a family member of the Dennys. I’d forgotten how much I like this rod and made three of this taper. Two of them have already found homes. I use two of them for lake fishing.
