NEW SPLIT CANE BAMBOO FLY RODS

BY

DON ANDERSEN

November 1/22

Good Morning,

Here is hoping you and your family are well. Sandy and I are both  boostered and doing well with no virus infections so far. We avoided a couple of close calls over Christmas by staying

home rather than visiting family where both our daughter and her daughter were infected Christmas eve and our son and his daughter several days later. They all have recovered with no apparent

                                         lasting effects.

Now to the rod building.

It been a year of contrasts. I finished a 9’0” 3-piece scalloped hollow built for a 2/3 weight this fall. Took it for a lawn test where I liked the 2 weight better. However, as the rod was designed

for the European method of nymphing where a extremely heavy nymph is lobbed rather than cast, lines are rarely out of the rod enough bend the rod. I was hoping to test run it on flowing water

but the great fall fishing on lakes and ponds got in the way. Also, on the bench are a number of rods. This include a 6’0” 3 piece 2/3 weight, a 7’0” 2 piece 3 weight, a 7’6” 3 piece 4 weight, 7'9" 5 weight and

a 8’0” 3 piece 4 weight. Three of the 4 are scalloped hollow build design. The rods are done and as soon as they can be test cast, all will be listed on the site.

Keep well all,

Don

Rod Serial # 018421 – 3 weight

I was looking for a shorter bamboo rod for those little streams we all like to fish. Starting with a Payne 98 taper, it was modified for the scalloped hollowing process and the taper was smoothed slightly. The rod casts a 3 weight great in my lawn test the other day.

Rod Serial  # 019615  - 5 Weight.

Today was a lucky find. Decided to check the web site reality against the rods in storage and I found a rod that I’d built in 2015 and never put up for sale. So out to lawn it went after checking the “build sheet” for the taper. It was a Payne 102. Did a quick net search and found several people who thought the rod was a medium fast 5 weight. After casting it for some time, I can only agree. 20>60’ casts with ease. A great taper.

Serial Number 019622H - 4 Wight

This rod was a delightful experiment. Utilizing my popular 7’9” 5 weight taper extending it 3” and slimming the taper resulted in a fine 8’0” 4 weight rod. Like other rods I’m building presently, this rod is scalloped hollow built in a 3-piece configuration.

Rod Serial # 039618 – 4 Weight

This rod is one of two that were “scalloped hollowed”. Utilizing the same taper for a 3 piece rod, I constructed a two piece rod. The swing weight saving was more than the equivalent the 2 piece construction. The rod was lawn cast and seemed very light in the hand.

Rod Serial # 019321H 7’9” - 5 Weight

This is a 3-piece configuration of the very popular 7’9” 5 weight rod of which I have made about 50. The blank is scalloped hollowed to reduce swing weight. The hollowing requires a slight compensation in the taper. The rod was lawn cast and feels very light in the hand. I made several casts >60’ and the rod tracks very accurate.

Serial Number 019322H 7’9” – 5 Weight

As I had some time this past winter, I decided to build another 7’9” rod similar to the one above. It seems like I cannot keep this rod in stock. This rod follows a near 40 year history with over 50 of it’s ancestors somewhere fishing.

Heavier Trout or Lake Rods

This is a series of rod tapers that have been designed to cast 6 weight lines. Personally, the 6 weight lines covers all my needs.

When I fish lakes, I generally have two rods strung ready to go. One with floating line with either a floater, hover or

                              rate 2>6 sinking line.

Rod Serial # 029919 – 6 Weight

This taper was created by west coast angler John Bokstrom. John’s taper was designed for cutthroat fishing in the Harrison River and sloughs of the Fraser River when the Coho fry emerge. This rod throws a 6 weight line with authority. This first rod of this taper I  built was a request for Mrs. Denny for her husband. The Denny’s ran the best fly shop Ive ever been into. Several years alter I was contracted to build another for a family member of the Dennys. I’d forgotten how much I like this rod and made three of this taper. Two of them have already found homes. I use two of them for lake fishing.

All the above rods are FOB my shop. Delivery is via courier with shipping anywhere in North American costing about $140 CDN.

All pricing is in Canadian Dollars. To get an updated currency quote use: http://www.xe.com/ucc/

Note: A price increase was necessary. I've held my prices for the last 20 years while all the materials required to build them have

increased.  As a result, my base price is increasing to $1500 with 3 piece rod adding another $150 and hollowing construction a further $150.
